MOTHER–INFANT AFFECTIVE REGULATION, ITS RELATION WITH MOTHER´S SELF-ESTEEM AND REFLECTIVE FUNCTION AS MODULATORS OF EMOTIONAL IMPACT OF LIFE EVENTS

The following project is an empirical study based on the follow up of the 40 dyads studied being the infants 6 months old in the previous project (UBACYT P 803), when the same infants are 36 to 42-month-old.
The present study aims at relating parental reflective functioning and maternal self esteem, with the influence of the emotional impact that potentially traumatic life events have on the mothers.
The relation between the above variables and dyadic affective regulation observed and microanalyzed when the babies were 6 months old (UBACYT P803) will be also studied.
The purpose of the study is to establish changes in the mother’s self-esteem and in the developmental patterns observed in the two studied moments, in order to develop conceptual resources for future preventive actions.
In the first stage 2006-2007 mothers will be interviewed with Parental Development Interview (PDI) (Slade, 2004), and reflective functioning and self-esteem will be assessed. Besides mother-infant play interactions will be videotaped. In the second stage (2008-9) dyadic play at 6 months and at 36-42 months will be analyzed in order to establish relations between these analysis and the maternal variables studied at the first stage.
