THE PROBLEM OF DECODERS AND NEURO-MENTAL TRANSDUCERS: CONCEPTUAL FOUNDATIONS FOR A RESEARCH PROGRAMME ON NEUROCOGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY

The aim of this project is to analyze the problem of so-called decoders and neuro-mental transducers. This is a theoretical study on the framework of theories and recent findings in neuroscience research. The study is inscribed in cognitive neuropsychology and neuro-phenomenology, discipline that aspires to a synthesis between phenomenology and neuroscience. Also relates to the neuro-philosophy, interdiscipline which aims to reduce the frame of subjective psychology into an objective neuroscience; and with the future prospective, discipline that speculates on the future for the purpose of generating hypotheses with heuristic value to address current theoretical problems alongside their empirical and technical implications. The work will analyze theoretical, empirical and technical problems associated with the realization of an hypothetical decoder system of mental states with ability to translate them into an intelligible representational code to an external observer. More specifically, it will try to determine the theoretical and technical viability of systems such as thinking readers or dreamlike experience transducers, which, among other problems, suppose the elucidation of: the existence and nature of an hypothetical mental code that would be deployed aware experience; the nature of the neural code behind; and the translation of the neural code in linguistic, imagined or mixed representations, intelligible from simple observation. The aim of this project is also to develop possible mental and neural architectures for any mental activity transducers systems. Although we do not intent to implement a technological device to implement them, we will develop a prospective map that includes a comprehensive set of necessary principles, processes and technologies involved in its translation. It means that we will carry out a survey of state of art of technologies about brain mapping, brain-machine interfaces and related. In the context of the project, concepts like "mental reading system", "mental decoder" or "mental transducer" have precise meanings linked to brain mapping fRMI studies? results, which decode the neural substrates of visual perceptions to recreate this percepts content in a reproductive system.
