INFLUENCE OF EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION ON AESTHETIC AND MORAL JUDGMENTS: COGNITIVE BASES AND CEREBRAL AND AUTONOMIC ACTIVATION IN HEALTHY PERSONS AND SIBLINGS DISCORDANT FOR SCHIZOPHRENIA

This project has the purpose of characterizing the interaction between moral and aesthetic judgments, as modulated by facial expression of emotions. We will study a sample of healthy persons and a sample of siblings discordant for schizophrenia, who share an increased genetic predisposition to the disease (which results in serious deficits in social interaction). To this end we will simultaneously measure cerebral activity (by means of fMRI) and peripheral autonomic activity (including electrodermal activity, heart rate variability, and respiratory rate, in the MRI setting), as well as behavioral response evoked by paradigms incorporating the aforementioned experimental variables: moral judgment, aesthetic judgment, and emotion expressed by faces. We have recently described right hemisphere activation déficits during emotional and social cognitive processing in siblings discordant for schizophrenia. Here we seek to determine whether this phenomenon encompasses aesthetic judgments as well. We expect the results of this project will help to understand how healthy persons develop judgments on other individuals in the social context, a process known to be severely affected and incapacitating in persons with schizophrenia.
