El objetivo del presente trabajo es demostrar que en algunas fuentes clásicas del alienismo temprano es posible reconocer la presencia de una concepción médica definida tradicionalmente como higiene. Tanto a nivel de las hipótesis causales de la locura como a nivel de las terapias promovidas, los tratados alienistas se ajustaban, con mayor o menor fidelidad, a un modo de pensamiento desarrollado en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, que permitió a la medicina general convertirse en una ciencia de lo público o de las cosas. Por otro lado, tomar en consideración la relevancia que las nociones de la higiene tuvieron en esa especialidad médica nos permitirá aprehender con nueva luz los rasgos esenciales del dispositivo terapéutico inaugurado a comienzos del siglo XIX, merced al cual el uso del asilo y la insistencia en el control de las condiciones de vida asumieron un rol destacado.

The purpose of this paper is to show that a medical conception usually called Hygiene is visible on some of the classical texts of the early French psychiatry. The causal hypothesis of the psychiatric books, as well as the therapies they promoted, were compatible with a way of thinking developed during the second half of the 18th century, which allowed the general medicine to transform itself into a science of things or a science of the public domain. On the other hand, to take into account the impact that Hygiene had over that medical speciality will give us a better understanding of the essential elements of the therapeutic dispositive opened up at the beginning of the 19th century, which insisted on the use of asylum and the control of life conditions.
