Abstract:
DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS AND REFLECTIVE FUNCTION OF DYSTHYMIC PATIENTS IN A PSYCHODYNAMIC PSYCHOTHERAPY. A COMPARISON OF THREE SINGLE CASES
In this study, the relationship between depressive symptoms and mentalization was investigated in three dysthymic patients who received psychodynamic psychotherapy. The research questions were: Can changes be observed over the treatment period in depressive mood states and / ormentalization? Is there a relationship between depressive mood states and mentalization? Method: Three cases were selected according to the following criteria: gender, age, psychiatric diagnosis, treatment results, and a minimum of 50 sessions. The Profile of Mood States (POMS) was used to measure Depression, and the Reflective Functioning Scale was used to assess Reflective Function (RF). The data were analyzed using Spearman rank correlation. Results: In the three cases, Depression decreased. RF decreased in only one case; and in two cases, no changes were observed. In one case a (negative) correlation between Depression and RF was found. Conclusions: In future studies, a larger and more homogeneous sample should be investigated. The use of more complex research design and statistical methods, and the inclusion of several process variables are recommended.
