Abstract:
SMOKING AND RELIGION IN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS.
Research on the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics, religion and smoking can subsidize preventive and therapeutic interventions. Objective: To examine the association between smoking, sociodemographic characteristics and religiosity (religion) in undergradute students. Material and Methods: 1126 students enrolled in UniversidadeEstadualPaulista (UNESP, Marília, Brazil) in 2010 participated in this study. Questionnaire for data collection pattern of tobacco consumption, sociodemographic characteristics and religiosity (religion) was applied. Results: 97 participants (8.61 %) were classified as smokers. Higher prevalence of smoking was found among male students, in the humanities area and among students who have no religion. Discussion: These data are compatible similar researches performed with Brazilian undergraduate students. However, there is still controversy in the literature. There may be differences in consumption patterns among different subgroups of students in higher education. New research, involving students from public and private colleges, in different regions of the country are still needed.
Keywords: Smoking - Sociodemographic characteristics - Religion.
