esos nuevos males nerviosos.

NEUROSIS AND NEURASTHENIA IN BUENOS AIRES: REPRESENTATIONS AND THERAPIES BETWEEN
MEDICINE AND MARKET (1870-1900)
Resumen del proyecto (inglés):
The main purpose of this research is to analyze the scientific theories, curative
practices and cultural representations developed in the city of Buenos Aires at
the end of the 19th century with regard to nervous affections that, both because
of their symptomatology and because of the remedies they required, were differentiated
from the mental affections that at that time were named as madness, dementia or
delirium. Indeed, almost simultaneously with the local conformation of theories
and clinical devices regarding madness, there emerged in Buenos Aires concerns,
healing offers and descriptive hypotheses about pathological conditions that distanced
themselves from alienation, and that were irreducible to topics that traditionally
colored the problematization of madness: danger and delirium. These new conditions,
characterized in the beginning by vague or diffuse symptoms, received changing
titles from the late 1870s: neuro-asthenia, neurosis, nervousness, nervous weakness,
among others. These terms began to be used with increasing frequency in the clinical
reports that appeared in the galenic journals, in the theses of degree or in expert
reports. Moreover, these new diagnostic categories had an equally noticeable circulation
in an alternative field, more linked to the market realm than to the world of
the medical knowledge. In those pages devoted to advertisements, all newspapers
in the city began to include an increasing amount of advertising of consumption
objects (syrups, pills, oils, etc.) offered as remedies for these new nervous
ills. These advertisements of objects quickly shared place with others linked
to curative services of professionals and non-professionals: the warnings of magnetizers
capable of curing the "nervous diseases" were joined by colorful advertisements
of luxurious curative clinics run by Buenos Aires physicians, specialized in electro-therapy,
aerotherapy, atmiatry, azotic waters or injections of testicular tissue.
