Abstract:
To address the field of mental health theoretically and empirically obviating the interdisciplinary approach is epistemologically questionable and socially dangerous. For the purpose of submitting to debate the contributions of a program of empirical research that defined its scope and contents on the basis of interdisciplinary cross-references, we present some data gathered durong the course of the project "Social Perception of Mental Health" ("PSSM":1987/1997). The Survey PSSM1 (1992) applied to a representative sample of adult urban population of the City of Viedma (Province of Rio Negro) allowed to identify the representational configurations of mental health, mental illness and insanity. The survey put forward the structural dynamics characterizing different social groups according to the higher or lesser degree of contact of those groups with information sources. The differential anchorage of the knowledge regarding the disinstitutionalization process, co-participation space between the public institutional sector and the community, indicated the relative social-cognitive and symbolic impact in its initial stage. On the other hand, the preliminary progress of the Survey PSSM2 (1997) applied in the City of Buenos Aires within the specific sphere of Family Courts, First Instance Civil Courts, constitutes a warning about the importance of psychiatric disinstitutionalization experiences within that sector. Vis a vis the social and legal controversies arising among the heterogeneous protagonists within the field of mental health, the interdisciplinary research is put forward as a resource to promote reflexive, critical and preventive thinking in the definition of social and sanitary policies.
