Variables that Affect Anaphoric Antecedents´ Accessibility in Text Comprehension and Memory.

Resumen:
Este artículo versa sobre los procesos y representaciones involucrados en la resolución de anáforas en textos narrativos. En un estudio de tipo off-line indagamos de qué manera afectan la accesibilidad del antecedente de anáforas, dos factores: la distancia superficial entre antecedente y anáfora y la continuidad tópica entre la oración que contiene el antecedente y el texto interpuesto entre antecedente y anáfora. Una menor distancia superficial y la existencia de continuidad tópica posibilitaron un mayor porcentaje de correctas identificaciones de antecedente y un mejor recuerdo libre de textos. Discutimos estos resultados a la luz de modelos cognitivos recientes propuestos para dar cuenta de la comprensión y recuerdo de textos.

Abstract:
VARIABLES THAT AFFECT ANAPHORIC ANTECEDENTS´ ACCESSIBILITY IN TEXT COMPREHENSION AND MEMORY.
This paper is concerned with the processes and representations involved in the resolution of anaphors in narrative text. In an off-line experiment we investigated how is affected the accessibility of the anaphoric antecedent by two factors: the superficial distance between antecedent and anaphor, and the topical continuity between the sentence containing the antecedent and the intervening text between antecedent and anaphor. Both a shorter superficial distance, and the existence of topic continuity, led to a greater percentage of correct identifications of the antecedent and a better free recall of texts. The results are discussed within the framework of recent text comprehension and text recall cognitive models.
