Jean Guichard es profesor de psicología de la orientación y de la consulta en orientación, en l´Institut National d’Etude du Travail et d’Orientation Professionnelle (INETOP) du Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (CNAM) de Paris (Francia), instituto que dirigió de 1996 à 2002.

Jean Guichard is professor of vocational psychology and career counseling at the Institut National d’Etude du Travail et d’Orientation Professionnelle (INETOP: National Institute for the Study of Work and Vocational Counseling), a university department of the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (CNAM: National Conservatory of Applied Technologies) in Paris, France. He used to be in charge of the direction of this Institute (from 1996 to 2002).

LA ESCUELA Y LA FORMACIÓN DE LAS COMPETENCIAS REQUERIDAS PARA ORIENTARSE PROFESIONALMENTE Y EN LA VIDA

En las sociedades occidentales mundializadas de nuestros días, los individuos deben enfrentar problemas de orientación más vastos y complejos que aquellos que tienen que ver con la definición de una trayectoria escolar o profesional: ellos deben concebir y construir su vida. Para hacer frente a esa situación, los individuos deben: 1) constituir un capital de competencias (de carrera o de identidades), 2) saber invertirlo en contextos que ofrezcan oportunidades a quien sepa descubrirlas y, sobre todo, 3) definir las referencias fundamentales que les permitan orientar su vida. Los períodos del fin de la adolescencia y de la edad adulta emergente son edades en las que los jóvenes efectúan numerosas experiencias que les permiten construir tales habilidades. Algunas de esas experiencias tienen lugar en la escuela secundaria o en la universidad. Pero ciertas formas de organización escolar y ciertos modos sociales de articulación de la experiencia escolar con otras experiencias de vida del joven parecen más favorables que otras para la construcción de las identidades dinámicas y diferenciadas (y de las competencias) requeridas para orientarse en la actualidad. Podemos preguntarnos si este acento puesto sobre el gobierno de sí permitirá a nuestras sociedades hacer frente a los desafíos (económicos, ecológicos y humanos) a los que se ven confrontadas.

Abstract:
THE SCHOOL AND THE FORMATION OF THE COMPETENCIES CALLED FOR DEVELOPING ONE’S CAREER AND DESIGNING ONE’S LIFE

In today’s globalized Western societies, individuals have to face career development issues that are vaster and more complex than the planning of their educational and occupational pathways: they must design their lives. To cope with such issues, they need (1) to accumulate career and identity competency capital, (2) to know how to invest it in settings that offer certain opportunities only to those who are able to discern them, and, above all, (3) to get the bearings required to chart a course for their lives. The end of adolescence and the emergence of adulthood are life stages during which young people engage in various experiences that enable them to construct such skills. Some of these experiences take place in high school or college. Certain types of school organization and societally-defined ways of combining school or college experiences with other experiences a young person can have seem more favorable than others for the construction of these dynamic, differentiated identities and competencies now required to design one’s life. The question remains, however, whether this focus on self-governing will allow societies to cope with the economic, ecologic, and human challenges confronting them at the present time.
