EXPOSITORY TEXT COMPREHENSION IN E-LEARNING: PRESENTATION FORMAT AND ATTENTIONAL CAPACITY
Palabras Clave en Inglés
1) Text comprehension 2) Multimedia 3) E-learning
The project is focused on studying the effect of presentation format of expositive
content on comprehension, like judgments, and perceived comprehension, when
presented on an e-learning platform. Instruction on an e-learning course allows
for multimedia content presentation. Also, as compared to face to face, this
type of instruction has less control on content presentation, and students have
more distractions, so learning depends more on the self-motivation of the student.
Previous laboratory research based on the cognitive theory of multimedia learning
has concluded that including images (graphics, animations or videos) can improve
comprehension, and increase motivation and interest. On the other side, students
tend to overestimate their comprehension when presented with multimedia content
vs. simple text, and irrelevant graphic material can impair comprehension because
it distracts attention. This study will test the effect of video presentations
in three studies, the first aimed at replicating and extending a previous study
on the presentation format (text vs. video). The second study will analyze whether
design features (short vs. long video) moderate the modality effect. The third
study will examine the inclusion of a talking head as another possible moderator
of the video effect. In addition, the interaction of presentation format with
attentional capacity, Internet skills, and task solving strategies will be analyzed.
