SEDUCTIVE IMAGES IN DIGITAL EXPOSITORY TEXT COMPREHENSION. RELATIONSHIP WITH INHIBITORY CONTROL AND WORKING MEMORY.
Considering the growth of multimedia digital texts and the tendency to prioritize
visual aspects, it becomes relevant to evaluate the effect of the seductive
images in virtual learning. The inclusion of images can have negative consequences,
such as the seductive image effect. This kind of image is found attractive,
but neither clarifies nor adds relevant information to the text. The effect
has been studied in controlled settings; this project aims to examine the seductive
images effect in an ecological virtual learning environment, where learners
complete the tasks in their home (or habitual place of study). As for the cognitive
mediators of the effect, this project analyzes its relationship with inhibitory
control and working memory. Participants will have access to two expository
science texts (with or without images) through a virtual platform, and will
answer questions about them. They will also complete inhibitory control and
working memory tests in individual, face-to-face sessions. A negative effect
on comprehension is predicted when images are included. The effect is expected
to be mediated by individual differences in inhibitory control and working memory
capacity.
