The aim of this work is to investigate the operative understanding level of number notion in children entering the primary school. To that end a set of activities was designed in order to examine the abilities obtained in the initial level according to its curriculum. Said activities required the mastery of notions such as cardinality through counting and ordinality through sequential representations and comparison of quantities and were examined by means of three stimuli which registered children’s answers. They were administered to twenty eight students of a public school with a middle-low socioeconomic level who had studied the pre-school. The cognitive behaviors were characterized and the participating variables analyzed. It was observed that there exists a relationship between the cognitive and personality aspects such as security and insecurity in answers as well as in the confrontation with other opinions. Also it was noticed that, independently from personality traits in children, the higher the cognitive structural level is the higher the security level becomes. This aspect contributes to the autonomy of thought, a fundamental value in education.
