Representations, preferences and alternatives constructed by youngsters finishing
their high school education.
The objectives of this project are the study of representations, preferences and
alternatives constructed by youngsters finishing their high school education,
the relation between them and the incidence of sociocultural family characteristics,
educational performance and gender.
The theoretical basis includes new psychological developments and concepts derived
from cognitive social psychology and educational sociology.
The representations related to professions and the perception of their accessibility
incides on the elaboration of educational and professional projects of young people.
The professional alternatives considered by the young, as result of the subjective
combination of their professional preferences and their perception of actual accessibility
(Gottfredson, 1981), varies according to the diversity of the personal, social
and educational experiences, and the articulation between them, which may limit
or expand their possibilities of choice. It is through these experiences and different
processes of socialization that personal identities are constructed.
This research is of theoretical interest, since its results will permit a better
insight on psychological processes (vocational maturity, development of preferences,
formation and transformation of projects and construction of identity).
The thesis will have different stages: the definition of the theoretical structure,
based on the question that guides this research. The methodology to be used will
be qualitative and quantitative, which will allow us to describe and analyze the
possible representations, preferences and professional alternatives, as well as
the influence of gender, social origins and education on them.
Youngsters are influenced by the context they are inserted in, but are active
in the signification of the events they undergo and respond in a personal way
to external changes and the inner conflicts that result from them (Guichard, 1995;
Dubar, 1998,2000; uy, Baubion-Broye and Violette Hajjar, 1998).
This research is, in addition, of practical interest, since it will allow the
design of orientation interventions for the young.
