Este proyecto de investigación se centra en el estudio de la existencia y las propiedades de un intérprete mental, entendido como construcción teórica referida a un mecanismo funcional que posibilitaría la traducción del pensamiento al lenguaje. La hipótesis de intérprete mental surge en el marco de los denominados Sistemas de Lectura Artificial del Pensamiento, programa de investigación en Neurociencia Cognitiva orientado a determinar el contenido de estados mentales a través de la decodificación de señales neurales asociadas. La fundamentación de la hipótesis del intérprete mental incluirá tanto el análisis teórico como el relevamiento de pruebas empíricas que le confieran verosimilitud. En lo concerniente al análisis teórico, se remitirá a la tesis de Vigostky sobre pensamiento y lenguaje y, adicionalmente, a la tesis de Fodor acerca de un lenguaje de pensamiento de carácter abstracto y representacional. En relación a las pruebas empíricas, dadas ciertas propiedades teóricas preliminares del intérprete mental, resultará pertinente orientarse
hacia un marco metodológico que integre tareas que demanden procesos metacognitivos, basados en reflexiones de carácter introspectivo. En consonancia, el proyecto tiene por objetivo precisar ciertas propiedades específicas del intérprete mental, a través de una estrategia dual que incluirá análisis teóricos y abordajes empíricos basados en tareas metacognitivas.

THE MENTAL INTERPRETER'S ROLE IN THE FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE OF THE INTERFACE BETWEEN THOUGHT AND LANGUAGE.

The project focuses on the existence and features of a mental interpreter, as a theoretical construction referred to a functional mechanism that would enable the translation from thought to language. The mental interpreter's hipótesis arises in the context of what is called Artificial Systems of Thought Reading, a research programme in Cognitive Neuroscience which aims to determine the content of mental states through decoding associated neural signals. The base of the thesis concerning the mental interpreter will include not only the theoretical analysis but also the survey of empirical evidence. In regard to theoretical analysis, the notion of the mental interpreter goes back to Vygotsky's thesis about thought and language, and what is more, to Fodor's thesis, which is about an abstract and representational language of thought. As far as empirical evidence is concerned, given some preliminary theoretical features of the mental interpreter, it will be appropriate to target a methodological framework integrating tasks that require metacognitive processes, based on introspective reflections. Consistently, the project aims at clarifying certain specific features of the mental interpreter, through a dual strategy that will include theoretical analysis and empirical approaches based on metacognitive tasks.
