La comprensión de textos supone un componente inferencial: el lector debe disponer de conocimientos relevantes y utilizarlos para construir en memoria una representación textual coherente. Dada la importancia de las emociones en las narraciones, existe un creciente interés en las inferencias de estados emocionales de personajes. Este proyecto se propone investigar experimentalmente esta categoría de inferencias. Se solicitará leer historias breves en computadora, una oración a la vez, con presentación controlada por el sujeto. Las historias tienen un comienzo tendiente a inducir en el lector una representación de la emoción que el protagonista experimenta, sin mencionarla explícitamente. Tras una sección posterior emocionalmente “neutral”, una oración refiere una conducta observable del protagonista, que implica una emoción, que puede ser la que estaba implícita en la primera parte del texto (congruente), o bien una de valencia afectiva opuesta (incongruente). Se predicen mayores tiempos de lectura para las oraciones incongruentes por comparación con las congruentes. Este efecto constituirá evidencia de la generación de inferencias emocionales. También brindará evidencia de que tales inferencias forman parte del procesamiento de la coherencia global, y no son meramente un fenómeno de integración local, dado el segmento de texto intercalado emocionalmente “neutral”.

Emotion inferences en the comprehension of narrative texts

Text comprehension entails an inferential component: relevant knowledge has to be at the reader’s disposal, and he has to manage it in order to construct a coherent memory representation of the text. Since emotion is one of the major elements of fiction, researchers are becoming increasingly interested in characters’ emotional states inferences. An experimental research on such inferences will be conducted. Subjects will read short stories on a computer screen, sentence by sentence, at their own pace. Stories’ structure is as follows: the first part provides information intending to induce in the reader particular representations of the main character’s emotion, which is not explicitly stated. After the following section, which is emotionally “neutral”, a target sentence mentions overt behavior reflecting implicitly the main character’s emotion state, which may be either the same one implicit in the story’s first part (consistent), or the opposite one in affective valence dimension (inconsistent). Longer reading times of consistent sentences compared with inconsistent sentences are predicted. The consistency effect will provide empirical evidence of emotional inference generation. It will also support the idea that such inferences contribute to the processing of global coherence, and they are not merely a local integration effect, given the inserted emotionally “neutral” text segment.
