The teacher’s role in the pedagogical mediation
Self-learning requires the teacher to take the role of mediator, which implies
a change in his/her position with regard to knowledge.
From a psychoanalytic perspective, we know that the teacher’s role which
completely accepts the place of “subject supposed to know”, in which
his/her knowledge is presented as structured and consistent, does not support
the development of students´ autonomy. To encourage this development of
the role it is necessary for the teacher to withdraw from this place of knowledge,
making his/her position a more flexible one.
In reading comprehension for specific purposes in a foreign language the student
supposes that the teacher has linguistic competence – in the foreign language
– and the teacher supposes that the student has thematic competence –
in a particular discipline. We believe that this symmetry is only “theoretical”;
that is to say, only existing in the discourse the teacher has as regards his/her
teaching–learning conceptions. In the pedagogical practice, the relation
between both types of competence is asymmetric.
The observation strategy will try to verify if this change in the teacher’s
strategy, in relation to the student’s knowledge and thus to the teacher’s
own knowledge, encourages the development of autonomy.
It will also be taken into account the results of the instruments applied in
the project P084 “The pedagogical mediation and self-learning in a foreign
language”.
