“Hacerse un nombre” o “quererse un nombre”: posibles consecuencias de las decisiones de traducción en la lectura psicoanalítica del caso Joyce

RESUMEN

Este artículo retoma el trabajo de Lacan sobre Joyce en 1975-1976 e interroga la decisión de traducción “querer hacerse un nombre” -y su deriva reductiva “hacerse un nombre”- en lugar de “quererse un nombre”, tal la versión original en francés. En el artículo revisamos las implicancias de ambas expresiones, tanto en francés como en español, para luego desarrollar una posible lectura del caso Joyce que considera la diferencia entre “quererse un nombre” y “hacerse un nombre”. Para esto, recurrimos metodológicamente a la obra del autor considerada autobiográfica y comentamos los apartados concernientes a esta dimensión de “quererse un nombre”. Concluimos que, en el caso Joyce, el “quererse un nombre” -entendido en términos de su deseo de ser EL artista- cumple una función de anudamiento de los registros que precede a la del ego corrector y al escabel que logró como escritor del enigma, habitualmente asociadas al “hacerse un nombre”.

ABSTRACT

“Making a name” or “wanting a name”: possible consequences of translation decisions in the psychoanalytic reading of the Joyce case

This article takes up Lacan’s work on Joyce in 1975-1976 and examines the translation decision “wanting to make a name for oneself” -and its reductive derivative “making a name for oneself”- instead of “wanting a name”, as in the original French version. In the article we review the implications of both expressions, both in French and Spanish, and then develop a possible reading of the Joyce case that considers the difference between “wanting a name” and “making a name for oneself”. For this, we methodologically resort to the author’s work considered autobiographical and comment on the sections concerning this dimension of “wanting a name”. We conclude that, in the case of Joyce, “wanting a name” - understood in terms of his desire to be THE artist - accomplishes a function of knotting the registers that precedes that of the corrective ego and the footstool that he achieved as a writer of the enigma, usually associated with “making a name for oneself”.
