No

HYSTERIA IN BUENOS AIRES (1880-1904)
This research project is the continuation of an earlier one, and takes up the
results and the questions left by the workalready done. The main purpose is
to study from a historical point of view how the Buenos Aires physicians understoodand
treated the hysterical disease between 1880 and 1904. During those twenty years
the Argentine physicians showeda great interest in that pathology, and in order
to explain its nature they tested very different theories. Some of thempostulated
that hysteria was the result of affections of the gynecological apparatus, while
others thought that it was aneurological disease characterized by automatisms.
On the other hand, physicians outlined different healing devices inorder to
remedy or cure hysteria, and these remedies used to respond, to a greater or
lesser extent, to the explanatorytheories defended by each author. For this
reason, during the period studied the doctors used very different remedies(drugs,
surgical interventions, hypnosis). Not only in consulting rooms and hospitals
did the physicians faced the riddleof hysteria. In fact, during their forensic
interventions about women suspected of criminal offenses, physicians usedthe
diagnosis of hysteria in order to explain the impulsivity of the accused, or
to recommend her legal innocence.Insummary, this research aims to analyze the
broad corpus of texts through which physicians rehearsed differentrepresentations
and explanations of hysteria. Special attention will be given to the therapies
and treatments they appliedto the disease, and on the other hand we will analyze
alternative remedies against hysteria, offered by other socialactors (apothecaries,
magnetizers, healers, etc.). It is, in short, a research on an essential chapter
of the history of localpsychopathology, which has not yet been reconstructed
in detail.
